Casting Concrete

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Take your understanding of sculpture to the next level in a comprehensive workshop that affords you the perfect opportunity to explore the fundamentals of the craft . In this intensive introduction to casting in concrete , students begin by modeling an artwork in clay , making a plaster mold , and then casting it in cement . Explore and discuss the potential of using conventional cement to create the most resilient and beautiful works .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use conventional materials like plaster of Paris to make a traditional mold that is cast into cement . Steel armatures and other methods of reinforcing the cement are then demonstrated .
ACTIVITIES : Daily demonstrations and presentations combined with individual and group discussions further the development of concepts and facilitate a better understanding of casting processes . Students spend time finishing and creating a presentation , culminating in a final group discussion .
FACULTY : Jose Ferreira is the Artistic Director for Sculpture at Anderson Ranch Arts Center . He is an interdisciplinary artist who has taught internationally . Jose was a Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago , a Research Fellow at the University of Sunderland and Senior Lecturer at the University of East London in the United Kingdom .

Beauty in the Beast

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Express your wild side in a fun and unique workshop that explores a variety of artistic elements . This hands-on course complements the existing skills of advanced students , as well as accommodates those new to this craft . Derive inspiration from a personal story , and utilize found and accumulated materials to produce a wall-mounting trophy head on a form chosen from an available selection of polyurethane animal heads . Learn pattern making skills and craft construction in addition to exploring the conceptual framework for creating a personalized visual language .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students are encouraged to find materials with a personal resonance ; old denim , a well-worn quilt , a box of love-letters , bark , handmade paper , sequins and beads , reclaimed rubber , old photographs or a collection of keys can be transformed into a work of art .
ACTIVITIES : We begin each day with 15 - 20 - minute slide lecture on multidisciplinary topics that include the use of animals in ancient art and tribal practice , trophy animals as study and conquest , Joseph Campbell ’ s The Power of Myth , and the use of animals in contemporary art . The work is self-driven and very hands-on with instructor assistance provided as needed in both ideation and technique .
FACULTY : Malia Jensen lives and works in Portland , Ore . Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally , and she has participated in residency programs at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation , Headlands Center for the Arts and The Ucross Foundation . Malia ’ s work is represented in Chicago by Richard Gray Gallery and in Portland by Elizabeth Leach Gallery .

Welding for Artists

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Explore the art of welding in this processdriven course , designed for artists who want to learn the fundamentals of the craft and broaden their skillsets . Draw , design and cut sections of steel manually or digitally with our CNC plasma cutting machine . This workshop provides artists an opportunity to learn and work with an experienced artist and fabricator on a variety of mild steel fabrication techniques . You are encouraged to experiment and think outside of your normal art making practice , developing an abstract object that provides a generous welding canvas and visual timeline of the learning curve . This workshop provides an excellent platform for a clear and safe understanding of the welding process .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with steel rod , angle iron , tube and sheet metal . The fundamentals of TIG and MIG welding are covered as well oxy-acetylene . Additionally , students use the plasma cutter to create any shape imaginable .
ACTIVITIES : Daily technical demonstrations are complemented by presentations on the history of welding . The instructor is available to assist students , and generous studio time is allocated for experimentation .
FACULTY : John Emerson is an American miscellaneist who spends most of his time in and out of the studio . His work has been exhibited widely in the U . S . Emerson received his M . F . A . from Alfred University in Ceramics , and he is the Studio Coordinator of Sculpture at Anderson Ranch .
