Jacques Vesery
SKILL LEVEL : III
CONCEPT : Develop new dimensions and possibilities in your woodturning craft under the guidance of a woodworking master . This dynamic workshop introduces you to David Ellsworth ’ s distinctive style in making open bowls and hollow forms on the lathe . By examining the full range of his style , you produce open bowls and hollow forms while simultaneously refining your existing techniques and learning new ones . Students gain a wider understanding of vessel design , learning about the ergonomics of body movements for greater working efficiency . We consider the why as well as the how of developing vessel forms . Challenge your ideas and concepts in an effort to learn more about the “ self ” in self-expression .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We primarily work with the versatile Ellsworth Signature gouge and hollowing tools , all of which are provided . You have your own high-quality lathe . The workshop is fully equipped with all of the tools and accessories necessary for doing hand work off the lathe .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with cut-rim and natural-edge open bowls , and progress to hollow forms . We give demonstrations throughout the week to illustrate specific processes relative to the students ’ interests and the work being produced in class . You are encouraged to bring digital images or actual work .
FACULTY : David Ellsworth ’ s work is included in the permanent collections of 41 museums and numerous private collections worldwide . He is a Fellow and former Trustee of the American Craft Council and has received fellowship awards from the National Endowment for the Arts , the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and the PEW Fellowship for the Arts .

CONCEPT : Add depth , tradition and artistic lines to your woodwork in this introductory workshop , which provides instruction and practice in two distinct methods : spindle turning and faceplate turning . Throughout the five-day course , students learn the essentials and build a foundation in woodturning through actual practice by crafting a footstool . We review proper tool use and sharpening . This fun and inviting workshop provides access to an intriguing artistic process , and culminates in a work of wood art that you can take with you at the end of the week .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students practice the skill of spindle turning , or turning between centers , to create the legs and stretchers of the footstool . We then craft the seat of the footstool using faceplate turning . We learn which tools are appropriate for each operation , and how to sharpen them . In addition , we cover working with jigs for ease of accurate drilling for joinery .
ACTIVITIES : We start turning on day one with practice spindles . You then carry on with creating your chosen design for the legs and stretchers . We incorporate the lathe and drill press for the attachment of the legs and spindles . Instructor demonstrations guide you through the process of creating your own footstool , including finishes .
FACULTY : Janet A . Collins is a full-time woodworking instructor in the Student Woodshop at Dartmouth College in Hanover , N . H . She is a graduate of the furniture program at North Bennet Street School in Boston , Mass .

CONCEPT : Explore good form and aesthetic in woodturning without the constraints of technique in a unique workshop that focuses on refining design style . The instructor demonstrates successful elements of design , with an emphasis on scale and proportion . We then practice and discuss these components , arriving at a more balanced result . In-depth lectures highlight the comparison of design before and after turning , including form , balance and proportions . We also dive into the golden mean and geometry of design , refining every turned object . Afternoon group discussions are an important part of the course as you share thoughts and viewpoints .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We learn the development of muscle memory in creating good forms on the lathe using sketching in three dimensions .
ACTIVITIES : Most days include a slide lecture that covers the history and theory of building with steel , and demonstrations of metalworking tools , processes and techniques . Students have time for ideation , research , prototyping and fabrication of individual projects . Instructor and group discussions are a vital part of this class .
