CONCEPT : Broaden your furniture making skills and knowledge by learning the fundamentals of Computer Numerically Controlled ( CNC ) machining in this in-depth workshop . During this hands-on course , we make a small object and use it as a vehicle to learn all the steps necessary to go from a concept to a finished product , cut on the CNC . Students learn how this powerful tool can benefit their practice by giving them accuracy , repeatability and freedom of form not easily attained with traditional methods . This workshop benefits both beginners and those who want to expand their CNC knowledge .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore the appropriate use of CNC as a tool , computer-aided drawing , and creating toolpaths in CAM software , as well as tooling and the challenge of fixturing the workpiece .
ACTIVITIES : Through demonstrations , examples and hands-on time , you learn the skills necessary to make a small project on the CNC router over the course of the class .
FACULTY : Peter Basil is a graduate of the School for American Crafts , and has spent several years immersed in the world of product development and digital manufacturing , working with multiple axis industrial CNC routers . He is currently Product Design Engineer at Thos . Moser .

SKILL LEVEL : II - IV
CONCEPT : Examine one of the most fundamental concepts of furniture making — storage — in a one-of-akind workshop that explores the different ways we cope with possessions . Cabinets can present , store , conceal , surprise , perform , transform , categorize , console and even intimidate . We look at how we categorize belongings — ours or someone else ’ s — whether it is socks , pencils , intimate letters , butterflies , vinyl records , clothing or even ashes . Each student is asked to bring things , or a solitary object if they prefer , that they wish to store , conceal or present . It may be housed in a freestanding form , wall hung or in something that is mobile .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work in solid wood , veneered panels and allied materials to complete our cabinet forms . We use traditional joinery and new processes . We review construction techniques ranging from the best way to the fastest way . Clamping strategies for flat panels to a variety of formed surfaces are included . We use clear finishes , painting , patination techniques , dyes or texturing .
ACTIVITIES : Daily demonstrations take place , from hand tool and machine joinery to wood forming , hinging techniques , drawer construction and making hidden compartments . We cover the fundamentals of solid wood construction and veneer work , and discuss hanging and finishing cabinets .
FACULTY : Michael Fortune provides design and manufacturing expertise for international development agencies that encourage sustainable economic growth . He received the prestigious Bronfman Award in 1993 , was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 2000 , received a Queens Golden Jubilee Award in 2002 , and was given the 2007 Award of Distinction from the Furniture Society based in North Carolina .

CONCEPT : Enrich your furniture making skill set through this highly unique week-long workshop that explores the use of paper as a diverse , malleable lightweight sculptural material . We build and illuminate a form using a variety of methods . Students construct armatures using natural materials and cover them with paper skins . We make paper laminate with an internal wire structure that can be manipulated into three-dimensional forms , build wooden panels resembling Japanese shoji screens , and apply paper to the resulting flat surfaces . Throughout our explorations we examine ways to enhance the luminosity of a variety of Eastern and Western decorative papers through cutting , folding , weaving and layering . We also explore the integration of electrical parts to illuminate our sculptures .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use basic hand tools ( drills , hand saws and other wood tools as experience allows ) to build armatures . Paper is the main focus as we begin by constructing sculptural forms using only the shape of the paper and glue .
ACTIVITIES : The instructor presents slides and examples of techniques to be explored throughout the week . We spend part of each day learning new techniques while working together in a step-by-step fashion . Instructor and group discussions are a vital part of this class .
FACULTY : Helen Hiebert constructs installations , sculptures , films , artists ’ books and works on paper using paper as her primary medium . She teaches , lectures and exhibits her work internationally , and she is the author of the books Playing With Pop-Ups , Playing With Paper , Papermaking with Plants , The Papermaker ' s Companion , and Paper Illuminated . She lives and works in Colorado .
