Craftufacturing : designing for production
George Dubinksy & David Short
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Define your furniture design style by exploring the art of veneering . For centuries , furniture makers have used veneering to embellish their designs using a wide variety of wood grains , patterns , colors and textures that are available in thin wood veneers . The decision to favor the use of wood veneer over solid wood is influenced by many factors , including design intent , structural integrity , environmental awareness and cost . In this workshop , we explore each of these factors — and many more . We learn through discussions , demonstrations and hands-on applications of veneered wood in the design and construction of furniture .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We learn fabrication and installation of wood veneers on solid wood and composite substrates , using hand tools and machine tools to cut and fit the pieces . We then use hide glue and contemporary adhesives with mechanical and vacuum pressing to adhere the designs to flat and curved surfaces .
ACTIVITIES : Students learn basic and advanced veneering techniques while completing a series of individual projects ( a sample board or chess board , a picture frame or a small wood box ). Demonstrations include techniques for cutting and joining veneers , veneer fabrication , hammer veneering , vacuum pressing , veneer matching and booking , and techniques for banding and inlay .
FACULTY : Miguel Gómez-Ibáñez combined a first career practicing architecture with his North Bennet Street School training as a cabinet maker to become a nationally recognized maker of studio furniture . His work featuring decorative wood veneers has been featured in Fine Woodworking , House and Garden and American Craft , and has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country .

SKILL LEVEL : III - IV
CONCEPT : Expand your idea generation and creative exploration by removing the barriers of constant analysis , myopic thinking or perfectionism in this fast-paced workshop . We focus on short one-day projects that encourage the practice of working intuitively , responsively and quickly during the design process , helping to evolve your ideation practice . Students work with various themes and methodologies to immediately capture their thought processes and transfer them into the making of an object .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : The workshop is open to a wide range of materials in addition to wood , such as reclaimed and recycled , engineered composites ( e . g ., plywood , particle board , etc .), found objects , fiber and fabric , and objects from nature . We use quick , direct and non-conventional methods of construction .
ACTIVITIES : Projects are assigned at the beginning of each day and thematic slideshows are presented every afternoon with working time to explore and experiment throughout the day . Projects should be completed by the following morning .
FACULTY : Wendy Maruyama has been making furniture and sculpture for over 30 years . She has exhibited her work nationally for over four decades , with solo shows in New York City , San Francisco , Scottsdale , Indianapolis , Savannah and Easthampton . Wendy has exhibited internationally in Tokyo , Seoul and London .

SKILL LEVEL : II
CONCEPT : Explore the manufacturing techniques developed and used by the home goods design and manufacturing company , Edgewood Made , in a unique production-focused workshop . Edgewood Made founders George Dubinsky and David Short introduce different manufacturing methods that are available in the making of small production runs that aim to remove barriers in the making process and create a path of least resistance , from design to final product . We create test products focused on specific techniques , culminating in newlylearned processes to make a small run of a product designed during the class .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use computer design in conjunction with traditional pattern making and provided outsourced parts and materials to create products that can be easily produced in multiples , while still maintaining the integrity of a finely crafted design .
ACTIVITIES : We incorporate instructional demos on production methods such as cold connections in metal , router jigs and specialized tooling . Discussions cover designing products from the making process that are inherently designed for being produced in multiples , and on the marketing and selling of well crafted items .
FACULTY : George Dubinsky and David Short are the founders of Edgewood Made , which produces home goods made from wood , porcelain and metal that are primarily produced for the wholesale market .
