Awkward Geometry
Sarah Marriage
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Embark on a journey in furniture creation that asks you to check convention at the door , and open your mind to entirely new ways of understanding what furniture could look like and how it could behave . This workshop explores the techniques and skills needed to create furniture that is structurally sound , but makes its audience scratch their heads . We build optical and spatial illusions , ranging from delightful to disturbing , that encourage new interpretation of the space all around us .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students begin with concept design and development through drawings . Compound angles and other tricky brain teasers are worked out on paper and in 3-D mockups before taking them into full-scale wood projects . We also learn how to cut traditional joinery at nontraditional angles .
ACTIVITIES : Slideshows take us through a quick history of furniture and its programmatic role within architecture . Students make both conceptual and technical drawings . We learn how to set basic woodworking machines to work safely at uncommon angles and make jigs when needed .
FACULTY : Sarah Marriage is the founder and director of A Workshop Of Our Own , a cooperative woodshop and educational center for women and gender nonconforming furniture makers in Baltimore , Md . She is the 2015 John D . Mineck Furniture Fellow through the Society of Arts and Crafts . Sarah studied Architecture at Princeton University and Fine Woodworking at the College of the Redwoods . She is on the board of trustees of the Furniture Society .

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We employ steam bending , bent lamination , molded plywood , ergonomics , drafting and model making .
ACTIVITIES : Each student begins with pencil and paper working toward a satisfying design . Each day strikes a balance between demonstrations , presentations , personal advising and ample studio time for students to produce their work .
