Blurring the Line
Katie Hudnall
SKILL LEVEL : II
CONCEPT : Explore modern notions of what furniture is , and then expand your understanding of what it can be . This engaging workshop examines the junction of sculpture and furniture making . Using traditional , contemporary and experimental woodworking techniques , students design and build furniture-like objects featuring function that might be more narrative than utilitarian . In this evocative course , we take a look at objects that act as an antidote for both boredom and gravity .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use traditional woodworking techniques such as mortise-and-tenon joinery as well as simple alternatives that allow students to work quickly and build more intuitively , from band-saw joinery to simple miters and splines to more experimental approaches . We cover and then use a range of hand and machine tools .
ACTIVITIES : Beginning with brainstorming sessions designed to expand our definition of furniture , students work to design and build prototypes whose functions defy our sometimes limited view of furniture . You are encouraged to share your own work , as well as the work that inspires and challenges you .
FACULTY : Katie Hudnall lives in Indianapolis , Ind ., where she teaches Furniture Design at the Herron School of Art + Design . Her work consistently blurs the line between furniture and sculpture , as she explores the beauty inherent in the fragile but resilient nature of relationships through the opening and closing of drawers and doors .

Building the Shaker Side Table
Adam Manley
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Using one of the most iconic , clean and simple functional forms in furniture , we hone our woodworking and design skills in a week-long workshop that explores furniture design by building a solid cherry Shaker side table . The Shakers developed furniture for everyday use , taking into consideration efficiency and durability . Creating this classic object to a set of determined dimensions widens students ’ understanding of woodworking and design in general while having fun . We work from rough lumber to finished product , demonstrating each step thoroughly along the way .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with solid wood only , focusing on preparation , milling , jointing , sanding and finishing . We also discuss shop safety , best practices , great tools and tricks of the trade , as well as why this design is so iconic and how it has held up for so long .
ACTIVITIES : We look at examples of table designs , focusing on the classic Shaker form . We discuss structural makeup as well as joinery selection for designing furniture . Much of our time is spent in group demonstrations and individual work time .
FACULTY : Adam John Manley is a furniture maker by training , who focuses much of his current practice on sculptural and outdoor installation works . Adam has taught at the Maine College of Art , the University of Massachusetts , Dartmouth , the University of New Hampshire , Haystack Mountain School of Craft , and most recently became Assistant Professor of Furniture Design at San Diego State University .
