SKILL LEVEL : II - III * Basic Photoshop skills are necessary .
CONCEPT : Create unique , one-of-a-kind monoprints by combining traditional and cutting-edge approaches . We use the Anderson Ranch Fabrication Lab and the Patton Print Shop to examine how laser-cut stencils , blocks and overlays can expand the possibilities of a painterly , playful and multilayered approach to making hand-pulled prints . We move fluidly between digital and analogue processes , exploring and learning how each can inform our printmaking approach and contribute to a flexible , evolving practice of art making .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use the Fabrication Lab to engrave woodblocks and cut paper stencils that can be combined with hand drawn matrices and marks in the Print Shop . Students who have a laptop with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator should bring it , along with a flash drive ; those without may use available equipment . Although the instructor demonstrates how to prepare images for digital applications , basic Photoshop skills are necessary .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop features hands-on demonstrations in the Fabrication Lab and Print Shop followed by blocks of time to produce creative work . As the workshop proceeds , we shift from quick exercises to individual projects , combining informal discussion and group feedback with personalized instruction and ongoing technical assistance .
FACULTY : Lari Gibbons is an artist who explores new and traditional approaches to printmaking through collaborative , interdisciplinary projects . She is Professor at the University of North Texas and also directs P . R . I . N . T , a nonprofit fine art press . She received an M . F . A . from the University of Nebraska , Lincoln .

SKILL LEVEL : I - II
CONCEPT : Revitalize your vision by creating multilayered prints that combine digital abstractions with handmade illusionistic representation . In this dynamic workshop , we discover the symbiotic relationship between traditional etching and archival digital printing . This combination of opposite visual languages creates complex prints , raising important issues concerning printmaking as a process for analysis of contemporary visual options . Students explore the intersection where the real and implied space confront and challenge each other . Aesthetically , these visually stimulating prints take on fundamentally opposed visual philosophies and places them in a charged hybrid environment .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore traditional intaglio beyond the basics along with the introduction and refinement of digital printing techniques . Successive demonstration on registration methods , color blending , ink mixing , digital manipulation and digital workflow are introduced . Students also enjoy large blocks of studio time .
ACTIVITIES : We begin by understanding the fundamental differences and the advantages of traditional etching and digital printing techniques . We alternate between demonstration , individual and group discussions and studio days . Discussions on image making and conceptual strategies are geared to individual ideas .
FACULTY : Francisco Souto received his M . F . A . from Ohio State University . His work is held in several public and private collections in the U . S . and abroad , including the Indianapolis Museum of Art , Sheldon Museum of Art and Blanton Museum of Art . He is a Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska , Lincoln .

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Engage in the Japanese printing process of Mokuhanga in this intensive workshop , emphasizing the rigorous carving and printing process that was used in 17th-century Japan , and is still used today by contemporary printmakers . We print using prepared blocks of wood , and move to carving and printing images of your own , focusing on registration and color mixing . We create a dialogue in storytelling as well as a relationship with color , form and space , developing a narrative between each print . Students compose printed images within this narrative format , where a dialogue emerges between the images .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use traditional Mokuhanga ( water-based Japanese woodblock printmaking ) and its techniques and applications .
ACTIVITIES : We begin by inking and printing with prepared blocks of wood with different types of patterns and surfaces . We then move on to carving and printing our own blocks . Demonstrations of printing and carving techniques take place daily .
FACULTY : Hiroki Morinoue received his B . F . A . from the California College of the Arts . He has taught at Anderson Ranch for over 20 years . He attended an intensive artistin-residence program sponsored by the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory in Japan . Hiroki also attended the 2nd International Mokuhanga Conference in 2014 and Satellite Program in Tokyo .

Mike Lyon is a student of Japanese art and culture and 21st-century computer technology . Through his pen and ink drawings and woodblock prints , he pays homage to the past while being rooted in the present . His work is in numerous museum , corporate and private collections .
