The Art of the Book : bound monotypes
Aurora De Armendi
SKILL LEVEL : I - II
CONCEPT : Visit the beautiful tradition of bookmaking by exploring the inclusion of painterly and graphic monotypes in this timeless medium . Students learn a variety of exciting water-based and oil-based monotype techniques to generate images and content , which are then bound in different book structures . Throughout the process , we investigate the sequential possibilities the book form offers . We look at the relationships between form , material and content in printmaking media and how these relationships can be used to create and inform meaning within book objects .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn book structures such as accordion meander folds and drumleaf binding . We practice water-based monotypes using silkscreen techniques and oil-based monotypes using the lithographic and etching press . Dry chine collé techniques are also demonstrated to combine with printed materials . Emphasis is on experimentation .
ACTIVITIES : Each day begins with demonstrations on bookmaking and printmaking in the studio . Students work independently on their projects with personal assistance from the instructor . Studio time is balanced with a slide presentation on historical and contemporary monotypes and pertinent readings on narrative in book form .
FACULTY : Aurora De Armendi studied at The Cooper Union and the University of Iowa . She teaches at Parsons The New School for Design and The Cooper Union Outreach Program and also works as a fine art printer at Two Palms .
