Oil-based & Watercolor Monoprinting : the best of both worlds
Karen Lederer
SKILL LEVEL : I - II
CONCEPT : Explore the rich intersection between painting and printmaking in this experimental monoprinting workshop . The class begins with an investigation into watercolor monoprinting in which students print from watercolor paintings and watersoluble crayon drawings onto Plexiglas . We then learn to incorporate oil-based stencils to create works that are at once graphic as well as gestural . The workshop covers a wide range of techniques from stencil printing to trace monotype . By the end of the course you develop a facility for using both oil-based and water-based materials in the same print and understand the benefits of each .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use oil-based inks , liquid watercolor paints , Stabilo woody crayons , Caran D ’ Ache crayons , pencils , stencils , craft foam and paper to create unique prints . The workshop focuses on incorporating both graphic and painterly elements into each print .
ACTIVITIES : We investigate various techniques through demonstrations , explore both graphic and gestural mark-making , engage avenues of nontraditional methods of printmaking , conduct individual and group discussions , have directed warm-up exercises , and enjoy plenty of open studio time .
FACULTY : Karen Lederer received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . She was an SIP Award recipient from the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop Program and an artist-in-residence at the Keyholder Residency Program at the Lower East Side Printshop . She currently works out of a Sharpe-Walentas studio .

Monoprints : stencils , blends & transfers
Elizabeth Ferrill
SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Create dynamic , one-of-a-kind prints in this engaging workshop , open to painters and printmakers alike who are intrigued by the monoprinting process . Often described as “ painterly prints ," we digress from the traditional brushwork common to monoprints and use mylar to make hand-cut stencils , yielding a more graphic , clean-edged effect . Stencil methods as well as mark-making processes are introduced , and we work with background blends , gum Arabic transfers and other fascinating monoprinting techniques . Students have the opportunity to translate drawings , paintings and photographs into the print form using Plexiglas plates as a printing surface .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn inking of plates , printing , press use , paper handling and monoprinting processes , including stencils , blends , transfers and image layering .
ACTIVITIES : This class consists of demonstrations , individual and group feedback , group discussions , and ample studio time with one-on-one help from the instructor .
FACULTY : Elizabeth Ferrill received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . She has had solo exhibitions nationally and internationally , including in Aspen , Colo .; Nashville , Tenn .; Omaha , Neb .; New York , N . Y .; and Berlin , Germany . Elizabeth is the Artistic Director of Painting , Drawing and Printmaking at Anderson Ranch .

Lithography : the old , the new & beyond
Deborah Chaney
SKILL LEVEL : I
CONCEPT : Discover how ideas and personal imagery can translate into the unique medium of lithographic printmaking with the help of a master printer . You don ’ t need a lot of muscle and heavy , cumbersome stones to create a lithograph . Though printing from stones is quite beautiful , the world of lithography using lightweight , convenient and portable aluminum plates is an excellent and handy alternative . Plates can be transported and carried with ease , allowing the possibility of quickly creating an intriguing , rich multi-color lithograph . This workshop is perfect for the printmaker who wants to learn this traditional method of lithography in one concise , straightforward , creative and informative course .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students are presented with everything from ball-grained aluminum plates , traditional crayon drawing and tusche washes to inventive flat areas of color and transfer techniques . We practice paper preparation , registration , polyester plate lithography , printing using both litho and etching presses , and producing a single or multi-color edition of prints .
ACTIVITIES : We learn through individual instruction as well as hands-on demonstrations of the litho process beginning with a collaborative drawing , with the expectation that students are then able to confidently produce a multi-color lithograph of their own .
FACULTY : Deborah Chaney is a Tamarind Master Printer based in Brooklyn , N . Y ., specializing in lithography on stone and plate in her studio , Deb Chaney Editions . Her printing and teaching experience includes the Tamarind Institute for Lithography , the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop , Pratt Institute , Parsons and La Ceiba Gráfica in Veracruz , Mexico .
