Oil Painting for the Absolute Beginner
Josh Meier
September 11 - 22
In Series : fall painting intensive
Holly Hughes
SKILL LEVEL : I
CONCEPT : Immerse yourself in the fundamentals of oils in a comprehensive workshop aimed at artists who are just beginning their pursuit of painting . Working primarily from observation , we investigate the relationship between images and their construction and how form and subject matter combine to create meaning within a picture plane . We cover the challenges of composition , perspective , tone and color mixing in addition to the mutable behaviors of paintings . Students walk away with a better established oil painting toolkit and the ability to take their artistic endeavour to the next level .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Working in oil , we cover the characteristics of material , types of brushes , preparing a palette , paint load and application on canvas and paper . Using contrasting elements like light / dark , warm / cool and chromatic / neutral , students learn to create form and space . We explore alla prima , grisaille , fat over lean , impasto and scumbling . Particular focus is placed on color mixing .
ACTIVITIES : Each day begins with a hands-on demonstration , brief slide lecture and optional readings with additional one-on-one and group discussions . Afternoons are open studio time for plenty of painting . Every exercise is designed for students to learn skill sets that can be continued in a home studio .
FACULTY : Josh Meier is currently the Studio Coordinator of Painting , Drawing and Printmaking at Anderson Ranch . He received a B . F . A . from the University of Kansas in 2012 . His work has been featured in New American Paintings and recent exhibitions include “ Record High ” at PDX Window Project and “ Your eyes like a punch ” at Anderson Ranch .

SKILL LEVEL : III
CONCEPT : Identify and explore new opportunities within your work during this intensive two-week painting course in which students are encouraged to pursue a multi-work project . By examining the differences between thematically guided series , series driven by formal variation , and art that is truly serial in nature , we scrutinize our work , searching for new possibilities . We encourage growth by looking at the relationship of one artwork compared to the next in a questioning process . We visually support a deepening sophistication of communicating by replacing a “ one work simply following another ” approach with an informed “ in series ” approach . Students can expect to wrap up with a sense of urgency and plans for directed work in the coming year .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : You may work with acrylic , oil or gouache on paper , panel or canvas , or feel free to investigate mixed media and constructed supports with relief or sections that engage the wall as installation space . A variety of approaches is encouraged .
ACTIVITIES : We work each day in the studio with structured studio visits with the instructor . Offered talking points and questions guide and deepen dialogue . Image presentations allow for discovery of new artists . The workshop is balanced with a grad school style final group critique .
FACULTY : Working in painting , printmaking and ceramics , Holly Hughes ’ work is inspired by decorative arts and nature . Recent exhibitions include a salon style museum installation , “ Blazon ," at the Dorsky Museum . A frequent Anderson Ranch faculty member , Holly is Full Professor in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design .
