CONCEPT : Broaden your painting language by examining the conditions contained within abstraction that combine psychology and philosophy . This workshop asks you to dig deep , and explore the creation of a non-objective image that may altogether arrive from a representational substrate and ultimately morph and dissolve into a new , abstract language . We delve into art history to augment our perception of the lineage of abstraction and the possibilities within our contemporary milieu vis-à-vis the personal and political .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students may choose to paint in either acrylic or oil on canvas , paper , wood , etc . Projects commence with drawing or collage where mixing media and experimentation are encouraged .
ACTIVITIES : We engage in discussions and slide lectures about historical and contemporary painting ; readings ; explorations and techniques for generating imagery ; instructor-led and self-directed painting prompts ; ample studio time and critiques .

CONCEPT : Combine your passion for drawing and painting with traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy in this one-of-a-kind workshop . Using sumi ink and brush on paper while referencing traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy , we take a contemporary and experimental approach to sumi ink drawing . We engage with the past as well as immerse ourselves in the present , while considering brush marks and lines to be descriptive , meditative , intuitive , narrative , contemplative , introspective and expressive . Students are encouraged to come with an open mind and experimental spirit — the only expectation is being present within the process .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use sumi ink , a variety of brushes and an array of papers in this workshop . We carefully examine the nature , properties and interaction of these three materials .
ACTIVITIES : We begin by exploring simple markmaking and working from The Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting . Each day , we engage in conversations and demonstrations . We work both silently alone and together .
FACULTY : Yoonmi Nam received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . Her work considers crosscultural experience and a sense of transience through prints , installations and drawings . She is Associate Professor of Art at the University of Kansas .
