SKILL LEVEL : III - IV
CONCEPT : Participate in the engaging dialogue and purposeful studio practice that increase the understanding of how your work is communicating to your audience . This two-week workshop consists of intensive studio time for painting , writing , image presentations , discussions and critiques . Presentations reveal contemporary and historical context for multiple painting ideas and approaches . Expand the understanding and creative development of your work within a broadly defined painting language through writings , discussions and critiques . Students expose their work to the class and , through mediation , get the feedback necessary to understand how the work is communicating , and learn how to discuss their work within the context of contemporary art .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students are welcome to work in the painting medium of their choice ( oil , watercolor , gouache , acrylic , etc .), and should come to class prepared with a digital portfolio of current studio work .
ACTIVITIES : We work in the studio each day and engage in individual and group discussions , exercises and lectures that focus on the history of painting and readings guided by the instructor .
FACULTY : Linda Geary is Professor / Chair of Painting at California College of the Arts in San Francisco , Calif . Her book , Studio Visit , is a compilation of 100 studio visit conversations with a focus on collage and color , including an essay by poet Norma Cole . Linda is a painter who lives and works in Oakland , Calif .

SKILL LEVEL : II
CONCEPT : Setting your artistic exploration free starts with understanding the architecture that makes up the grounds of a painting , whether you are working figuratively , representationally or abstractly . In this workshop , students with basic oil painting experience are exposed to new approaches for composing , including practical techniques , building different types of grounds , color mixing , how to layer and deconstruct , and when to employ tightness versus looseness . Develop techniques for keeping your art as fresh as possible while simultaneously building the scaffolding to create a cohesive body of work through this engaging analysis of painting .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : With a strong emphasis on safe studio practices , this class teaches techniques for oil painting used by Rembrandt and Velasquez . We learn to minimize our exposure to toxic chemicals , while at the same time working with traditional painting methods .
ACTIVITIES : We explore various materials , build our skills in several painting techniques , and develop many paintings from beginning to end throughout the week . We learn through technical instruction , individual feedback and guided studio time .
FACULTY : Kimberly Brooks is a contemporary painter who blends figuration and abstraction to explore a variety of subjects dealing with memory , history and identity . She exhibits nationally , and her work has been showcased in numerous publications and exhibitions , including the Whitney Museum , MoMA and the California Institute of the Arts .

SKILL LEVEL : I - II
CONCEPT : Tap into your unique way of seeing the world , and apply your joy of painting through fun and unexpected prompts . In this beginning acrylic painting workshop , students solve visual problems , find their voice , and get direct experience with painting techniques . Working with acrylic on paper to move nimbly through ideas , this guided workshop serves to strengthen confidence in one ’ s process and create a model for the endless possibilities useful for growing a painting practice with a focus on supportive guidance and fun . At the end of the week , you go home with an abundance of small paintings , new techniques , experience and a sketchbook full of ideas .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore mark making , color mixing and theory , using fluid and hard body acrylic paint , paint handling , and techniques for generating ideas and collecting the sights , images and various textures around us .
ACTIVITIES : Students combine exercises and supportive discussion to strengthen the link between the hand , eye and self . In the mornings , we explore targeted and fun prompts to understand shape , color , composition , inspiration and process . In the afternoons , we have a chance to use these insights and exercises in your own ways .
FACULTY : Sydney Cohen ’ s paintings explore consciousness , self-consciousness and the ways that visual and other pleasures are shared . She is represented by Satellite of Love Gallery in San Francisco , Calif ., and teaches painting at California College of the Arts . She is a 2015 – 2017 Affiliate Artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts .
