SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Challenge unfamiliarity in portraiture , landscape , interiors and still life in an engaging and contemplative workshop that expands the language of texture through drawing . Students rework methodologies , and stretch the distinctive boundaries of technique to create layered , dense concepts out of formalist work . The aim is not to solidify your style , but to usurp what you know and how you apply your hand so your work can enter new narratives . Investigating each mark as text , we can reconfigure — incorporating innovative features we would not have otherwise considered . We do so by re-constructing our respective alphabets .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students work in any drawing materials and substrates they choose to bring to the workshop . Students should bring a presentation ( in either slide form or physical artworks ) of five to ten works , which they feel defines their style , to be used as a catalyst from which to expand .
ACTIVITIES : We engage in gesture exercises ; on-site drawing practice in the studios with and among fellow students , alone , and throughout Anderson Ranch ; slide lectures ; discussions , and individual studio sessions with the instructor . Students are highly encouraged to entertain and push drawing techniques after hours , if possible .
FACULTY : Toyin Ojih Odutola creates drawings that exploit diverse mediums to emphasize how an image is a striated terrain to mine beyond representation . Her work is found in the collections of Baltimore Museum of Art , Philadelphia Museum of Art , Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Museum of African Art ( Smithsonian ).

SKILL LEVEL : IV , portfolio review required
CONCEPT : Explore the strengths and limitations of your current work and practice in order to re-energize them in this one-week , advanced painting and critique workshop — the last in this three-year mentored study program . Students have a work space and all approaches are welcome . Guidance with making choices and expanding skills and resources supports artists ’ artistic trajectories . The workshop is equally divided between critiques and working sessions with emphasis on investigating issues that come up during discussions . Participants should expect to work outside of workshop hours . This workshop is for artists who have considerable painting experience , especially those familiar with contemporary practices and theory .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : You are welcome to use materials of your choice . Typically , students use paint , charcoal or enamel on canvas , but there are no limitations . Feel free to bring works already in progress or start with new work during the workshop . Drying time and size should be considered in relation to shipping .
ACTIVITIES : This workshop is primarily focused on studio time supported by slide presentations , discussions and critiques driven by instructor questions and students ’ paintings . Readings and short daily writing assignments are also part of the course work .
FACULTY : Enrique Martínez Celaya ’ s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art , Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum der bildenden Kunste in Leipzig , Germany . Among other awards , he has received the J . Paul Getty Trust Fund for Visual Arts .

SKILL LEVEL : II
CONCEPT : Ignite your creative juices in a week long workshop that pairs engaging demonstrations of twodimensional mixed-media techniques with dynamic exercises to get you out of your artistic comfort zone . We work with painting , drawing , collage , transfer techniques , stenciling , hand and machine sewing and more to create rich and multilayered works of art . Students work individually with the support and advice of the instructor to master demonstrated styles and to incorporate new media into their own work . We emphasize identifying and pursuing personal creative direction along with an introduction to critical dialogue . Students finish the class with plenty of new skills , materials and ideas for continuing work beyond the workshop week .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use water-based paint , drawing media , gluing techniques , collage , transfers , fabric , sewing techniques and more .
ACTIVITIES : Students engage in technical demonstrations , exercises , individual work time , group critiques , and one-on-one discussion with the instructor to develop ongoing work and build studio work habits .
FACULTY : Teresa Booth Brown studied painting and sculpture at Bennington College . Her work can be found in private and public collections including Fidelity Investments Boston , Bennington College , University of Colorado Art Museum ( Sharkive ), the State of Colorado ( Mesa University Library ), and the U . S . State Department .
