Advanced Studio Critique

SKILL LEVEL : IV , portfolio review required
CONCEPT : Engage in the critical dialogue and individual instructor critiques that are fundamental to honing your work and deepening your understanding of contemporary art practice . In this workshop , you produce work in the studio at your own pace , pausing daily for discussion and consideration with the instructor . Topics are in-depth and cover a wide-ranging scope , including technique , concept and approach . Students are expected to work independently and to set their own studio goals for the week . We strongly encourage a broad interpretation of painting for this workshop , and welcome artists working in installation and incorporating 3-D elements into their paintings .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students choose their own media and techniques to create their work in the studio . This class is also open to painters who are exploring installation , sculptural elements , and broader interpretations of the medium . Students should come to class prepared with a presentation of their current work .
ACTIVITIES : We work in the studio throughout the day . Discussions and studio visits take place on a daily basis . Students are expected to have a rigorous studio practice and work the entire class time .
FACULTY : Mickalene Thomas is a United States Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz Fellow , visual artist , filmmaker and curator who has exhibited nationally and internationally . Her paintings combine art-historical , political and pop-cultural references . Mickalene ’ s work introduces complex notions of femininity and challenges common definitions of beauty and aesthetic representations of women .

Nature as Image in Watercolor

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Unearth the essence and details of nature through painting in watercolor . From big vistas to nearby natural environments , Anderson Ranch provides a varied palette of vantage points from which students discover new approaches to watercolor . Using multiple techniques , we capture luminosity , mood , texture and intimate or grand scales . The fast-moving method of watercolor can be additive and subtractive , immediate or more developed . The class is adaptable to a range of abilities , and provides guidance for growth through production , discussions and slide shows . We learn about ourselves by looking outward .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We investigate the use of watercolor , which can include tube watercolor , cake watercolor , dispersions and liquid watercolors . Students experiment with wet into wet , slow layering , dry brush , light to dark , broad to detail and subtractive / additive methods .
ACTIVITIES : We alternate between individual and group discussions , and learn about the history of watercolor through slide talks . Exercises include quick warm-up paintings , graphed paintings , painting on color ground , solid shapes in abstract spaces ( primary , analogous and complementary colors ), color mood or time of day studies , and longer paintings from chosen sites .
FACULTY : Nancy Friese works on-site in the landscape . She has received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships , and residencies in the World Trade Center , Giverny , Pont-Aven and Tokyo . She received her M . F . A . from Yale University as a National Academician . Nancy teaches at Rhode Island School of Design and is represented by Cade Tompkins Projects and Oehme Graphics .

The Modern Photographic Image Transfer : hacking

CONCEPT : Find new ways to capture and print a photograph , redefining what photography can be . This workshop focuses on the hybrid of analog and digital art processes to add material ity to an image with traditional media . We combine images with materials such as slate , granite , wood or metal that have heft , mass and texture . This workshop is for anyone who wants to push the boundaries , explore and experiment with new options and new dimensions .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Inkjet prints are transferred to and combined with traditional art materials that expand the media vocabulary of the artist . We focus on the collaging of the photographic image to the blank canvas . Historical photographic processes are reinvented with nontoxic art processes . Photo transfers are completely integrated with real-world layering .
ACTIVITIES : Each day begins with a discussion of each participant ’ s goals . The first two days are spent teaching the many methods the instructor has developed for capturing , processing and producing images for transfers . The next two days we introduce new processes and then the afternoon is spent in open studio time with individual instruction .
FACULTY : Bonny Pierce Lhotka is the recipient of the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for Technology in the Arts . She is the author of three books , including Digital Alchemy : Printmaking techniques for fine art , photography and mixed media . Her work is in the collection of the Smithsonian and the U . S . Department of State . She is represented by Walker Fine Art in Denver , Colo . Bonny is the inventor of the DASS ART image-transfer processes .
