Transforming the Drawing

SKILL LEVEL : III
CONCEPT : Expand your ability to translate the threedimensional world through painting on a two-dimensional canvas when we explore the process of observation that allows us to truly see and ingest forms , shapes and light . We slow down so that we can observe and simplify our environment , and not rush to paint what we think we know . This is a technical and philosophical shift in the approach to painting . Students re-familiarize themselves with oil paint through its stages of malleability and its color characteristics . Emphasis is on deeper analysis of how to frame your interests , observations , and what you desire to translate in this luminous and versatile medium .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Using oil paint , students focus on color mixing and blending , wet-on-wet , and wet-on-dry paint application techniques . Students bring in resources from which to paint , such as photographs and / or objects , and to practice the art of observation and intention .
ACTIVITIES : We explore paintings through a slide lecture examining different international artists . We then quickly jump into individualized studio projects where students explore their own interests through painting . The instructor works one-on-one with students throughout the workshop .
FACULTY : Ana Teresa Fernandez has taught at the University of California , Berkeley , California College of the Arts , San Francisco Art Institute , St . Mary ’ s College and the University of San Francisco . She has also taught in Mexico , Haiti , Brazil and South Africa . Teaching students who are underprivileged and new to art , as well as engaging at a critical and highly conceptual level , are both equally important to Ana ’ s teaching philosophy .

SKILL LEVEL : I
CONCEPT : Achieve the transparency and immediacy unique to watercolor painting in a fun and accessible introductory workshop that incorporates a series of simple studio exercises encouraging students to explore the fundamentals of watercolor . Using a portable half-pan of watercolors with a limited palette , a few brushes and a small watercolor block , emphasis is on developing skill in controlling the soluble paints and learning to reserve and pull back highlights to create the brilliant and delicate range of tones that define watercolor . We explore wetand dry-brush , the laying of tint washes , scumbling , and methods for reserving and lightening areas .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We discuss composition and under-drawing with pencil and light brushwork . Stretching larger paper is demonstrated , and we compare traditional transparent watercolor paints in tube and cake form with gouache , glue-based and synthetic watermedia pigment binders .
ACTIVITIES : Beginning demonstrations with practical still-life sketches are followed by assisted self-directed sessions and daily discussions of both technique and content . Color mixing is demonstrated and practiced , as well as the relationship between observed light and the effects that can be achieved with the reduced value range of a painted surface .
FACULTY : Brian Shure was a Master Printer at Editions Press Lithography Studio and then at Crown Point Press , where he also coordinated the China Woodblock Program . He taught at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1996-2016 . Brian has written two books on chine collé : Chine Collé , a Printer ’ s Handbook and Magical Secrets About Chine Collé .

SKILL LEVEL : I - II
CONCEPT : Uncover broader means and strategies in drawing while delving into the possibilities of the medium in this layered workshop . Students create dynamic , two-dimensional works on paper while investigating the combination of drawing with other media like printmaking , collage and alternative methods to enrich and enhance their imagery . This course challenges previous perceptions about drawing , and encourages students to make fresh responses as we develop composition , texture , line and rendering skills . Experimentations in creating our own mark-making tools and unconventional media serve as a way to transform , enliven and add multiple layers to drawing .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : As we draw from both observation and other sources , we use a wide range of drawing media : powdered graphite , charcoal , inks , pastels , day old coffee and various papers . Basic techniques are covered in demonstrations along with learning how to utilize frottage , collage and multiple transfer methods .
ACTIVITIES : Each studio day begins with drawing exercises , followed by technical demonstrations , group discussions and slide presentations that apply to the topics covered .
FACULTY : Simonette Quamina received her M . F . A . in printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 . She teaches drawing at Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design . She has exhibited her work nationally and currently lives and works between New York and Rhode Island .
