The Center for Advanced Mentored Studies at Anderson Ranch is a vital link in the education of emerging artists . Advanced students gain access to master faculty — top contemporary artists and educators — over a three-year period , providing rigorous inquiry and steady direction for their individual practice . Students gain the critical levels of knowledge and mentorship necessary to take the next , important steps of becoming serious contributors in their chosen fields . The program , which includes studio work , critical dialogue and critique offers artists the opportunity to expand the scope of their current practice as well as their ability to develop a critical eye regarding their work . Students meet once per year for a week-long workshop at Anderson Ranch . Students are expected to continue to work on a project ( or projects ) over a three-year period . In addition to the summer classes , participants engage in mid-year portfolio reviews as well as individual bi-monthly meetings online with faculty to discuss their ongoing work and progress . At mid-year , faculty conduct an online critique with the whole group .
CONCEPT : The digital age has given documentary photographers and photojournalists new ways to tell stories with greater authorship and control . Embark on a three-year journey and focus on how to create a personal documentary project and get it seen . The ultimate goal is to find a subject that speaks to a personal passion , document it in a unique visual style , and disseminate the work . We harness new technologies to be more effective storytellers , including iPhones and Instagram , social media and transmedia .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We learn through presentations , discussions , critiques and editing of work .
ACTIVITIES : Each morning begins with a presentation about documentary photography and contemporary practices . Students participate in editing and review sessions , group reviews of each student ’ s portfolio / essays , one-on-one sessions with the instructors to discuss personal projects , and talk about career advice or the promoting and publishing of work .
FACULTY : Ed Kashi is a photojournalist , filmmaker and educator whose sensitive eye and an intimate relationship to his subjects are signatures of his work . He is a member of the VII Photo Agency . Through his photography , filmmaking and work as a mentor , teacher and lecturer , Ed is a leading voice in the photojournalism and visual storytelling community .

James Estrin is a senior staff photographer for The New York Times . He is the founder of Lens , the Times ’ s photography blog , and has been its co-editor since it launched in 2009 . James has worked for The New York Times since 1987 and was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team in 2001 . He is a co-producer of the HBO film " Under Fire : The Untold Story of Pfc . Tony Vaccaro ."

The Art of the Short Documentary

SKILL LEVEL : II - III
CONCEPT : Get a behind-the-scenes look at how to produce compelling , concise documentaries in this workshop that examines the art of the short documentary film . Most filmmakers today are learning how to tell powerful stories in as little as three to ten minutes , which is an ideal amount of time for online or for film festival submissions . Learn about thoughtful pre-production , efficient shooting , and get a grasp on story structure . Take an in-depth look at the technical and narrative challenges of creating short documentaries , and produce your own short film in this engaging and collaborative course .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We work with video cameras or DSLRs with audio recorders , microphones , tripods and Adobe Premiere .
ACTIVITIES : We begin the week by exploring story structure , interviewing techniques , video composition , shooting for narrative sequencing , audio capture and basic editing . Students work in pairs to find and document story subjects , and each team produces a short film by the end of the course .
FACULTY : Julie Winokur is Founding Director of Talking Eyes Media , a nonprofit production company committed to social change . Her work has appeared in Time , The Atlantic and National Geographic , as well as on PBS and Discovery , and she has produced films for the International Rescue Committee and Oxfam . Julie is currently producing a digital magazine called Newest Americans .
