The Modern Photographic
Image Transfer : hacking the digital print

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Find new ways to capture and print a photograph , redefining what photography can be . This workshop focuses on the hybrid of analog and digital art processes to add material ity to an image with traditional media . We combine images with materials such as slate , granite , wood or metal that have heft , mass and texture . This workshop is for anyone who wants to push the boundaries , explore and experiment with new options and new dimensions .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Inkjet prints are transferred to and combined with traditional art materials that expand the media vocabulary of the artist . We focus on collaging of the photographic image to the blank canvas . Historical photographic processes are reinvented with nontoxic art processes . Photo transfers are completely integrated with real-world layering .
ACTIVITIES : Each day begins with a discussion of each participant ’ s goals . The first two days are spent teaching the many methods the instructor has developed for capturing , processing and producing images for transfers . The next two days we introduce new processes and then the afternoon is spent in open studio time with individual instruction .
FACULTY : Bonny Pierce Lhotka is the recipient of the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for Technology in the Arts . She is the author of three books including Digital Alchemy : Printmaking techniques for fine art , photography and mixed medias . Her work is in the collection of the Smithsonian and the U . S . Department of State . She is represented by Walker Fine Art in Denver , Colo . Bonny is the inventor of the DASS ART image-transfer processes .

The Durational Image

SKILL LEVEL : II - III
CONCEPT : Combine still and motion photography in unique and exciting ways that bring your world to life . In this workshop , we explore both still and motion photography through exploration of techniques , processes and an overall emphasis on hybrid picture making . The course provides instruction in the basics of shooting , editing and output for digital images and sound , as well as a discussion of the use of motion-based photographs in context . Students receive instruction in post -production skills and tools for editing and altering both still and video images , as well as sound . We also investigate the creation of camera-less motion images , animations and GIFs .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We introduce image capture via digital video cameras and DSLR cameras and lenses . We also cover the strengths of commonly used art production software and hardware , including the Adobe Creative Suite : Photoshop , Premiere and After Effects . Students learn lighting basics , including three-point lighting , portrait / figure lighting and soft lighting with bounce and diffusion . Finally , we explore display modes including choosing between projectors , monitors , media players and multi channel video systems .
ACTIVITIES : Students learn from slide presentations , individual and group discussions and field trips . Each student works on an individual project , either an ongo ing body of work or discovering new pathways .
FACULTY : Owen Kydd was born in Calgary , Alberta , and currently lives and works in Los Angeles . He holds an M . F . A . from the University of California , Los Angeles . Recent exhibitions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art , SFMOMA , FOAM Museum Amsterdam , Albright- Knox Gallery Buffalo and the International Center of Photography in New York .

Radical Picture Making

CONCEPT : Push your work further and explore new horizons in your photographic craft in this immersive workshop , which challenges advanced photography students to take their picture making to the next level . We examine your current work in the context of exciting contemporary art and look at ways of expanding your style and leveraging your strengths in new ways . Through engagement with a wide variety of contemporary art practices , we seek to broaden our experience and accelerate creativity .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students explore digital photography and printmaking via a digital workflow using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop .
ACTIVITIES : We rely on a combination of lectures , screenings , assignments , writing exercises , making , shooting , processing , printing , discussion and critique . We start with slide presentations , and then explore through individual and group discussions and field trips . Each student works on an individual project — either an ongo ing body of work or discovering new pathways .
FACULTY : Daphne Fitzpatrick is an artist living and working in Brooklyn , N . Y . Her photography , sculptures , video and installations are playful , libidinous and rife with Freudian slips . Her work has an upbeat , effortless approach expressing a new nontoxic masculinity . Daphne ’ s work is exhibited widely , both nationally and internationally . She is represented in many collections including the West Collection , Saatchi and most recently the Carnegie Museum of Art . She has been on the faculty of ICP-Bard MFA and Yale University .
