Form & Fire : the art of wood & soda kilns

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Step outside your normal work environment , and take risks in a very supportive studio atmosphere . Travel to the north coast of Jamaica for a weeklong intensive workshop focused on pottery-making techniques and design . This is the 22nd year of Anderson Ranch workshops in Jamaica .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Demonstrations include throwing and hand building techniques . We engage in further exploration of form and surface and also address alteration , both on and off the wheel . We build forms using the wheel , slabs and pinching . Participants can bring bisqueware for firings , but are limited to small cups and bowls in stoneware or porcelain .
FACULTY : Chris Gustin is a full-time studio artist living and working in South Dartmouth , Mass . Chris is widely known for his extensive investigation into form and shape . He makes large-scale sculpture vessels and pottery . Chris received his M . F . A . from Alfred University . Chris was recently inducted into the International Academy of Ceramics and in 2016 was honored as Fellow by the American Craft Council .

David Pinto , a studio potter born in Jamaica , taught at the 92nd Street Y while living in New York . A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design , he has shown his work in Japan , New York and throughout Jamaica .

Doug Casebeer directs the Ceramics program at Anderson Ranch . He lived in Jamaica for three years , working on a pottery project for the United Nations . “ The Jamaican pace has a way of freeing up the mind . I always return home invigorated and alive with my work ,” says Doug . Doug is Artistic Director of Ceramics and Associate Director at Anderson Ranch Arts Center .

Machining Molds

SKILL LEVEL : II - IV
CONCEPT : Explore new horizons in your ceramic practice in this highly innovative workshop that focuses on the use of digital technology for the creation of ceramic objects . We examine the formal and theoretical applications of this interface between matter and data . While the class is tailored specifically for ceramic sculptors , potters and educators , the processes we cover are applicable to a range of other 3-D media .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We explore beginning and intermediate computer-aided design ( CAD ) and parametric modeling , focusing on the use of Rhino 3-D , Grasshopper and the CNC milling machine . Students work with plaster molds for slip casting and press molding , and we get an introduction to 3-D printing and laser cutting .
ACTIVITIES : Each day incorporates software and digital fabrication demonstrations as well as hands-on work with software , machines and ceramic materials . We create individual works articulating the tools and processes presented in the workshop . Students participate in critiques , discussions and selected readings exploring both the technical and theoretical repercussions of digital ceramics .
FACULTY : Del Harrow teaches ceramics and sculpture at Colorado State University . His work has been exhibited recently , the Denver Art Museum , the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston , Haw Contemporary in Kansas City , Mo ., and Harvey Meadows Gallery . Del received his M . F . A . from Alfred University .

The Structure of Pots

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Investigate how underlying structure is determined , explored and realized through wheel throwing techniques in a unique introduction to ceramics . This comprehensive workshop asks students to consider where our sense of proportion comes from and how we decide proportions . We take a closer look at textures , edges and shapes that are enhanced by the atmospheric firing processes in the kilns . This workshop is designed to be an introduction to basic pottery making methods .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We use stoneware clays , glazes , slips and the potter ’ s wheel to explore form and develop ceramic technical skills .
ACTIVITIES : Students explore all aspects of forming and preparing wheel-thrown pots for firing . Hands-on activities are complemented by morning and afternoon demonstrations and personal instruction .
FACULTY : Dan Murphy is a studio artist and Associate Professor of Ceramics at Utah State University in Logan , Utah . His work has been displayed in over one hundred exhibitions including eleven during national annual NCECA conferences . Dan has made forty-two presentations at universities and art centers and has presented at four wood-fire conferences .
