WELCOME TO DOUBLE EXPOSURE 2016
LETTER FROM CO-DIRECTORS
DIANA JEAN SCHEMO AND SKY SITNEY
In the year since Double Exposure first opened as a celebration of films driven by
the investigative instinct, the public’s fascination with investigative journalism has
grown. The success of such films at SPOTLIGHT and CITIZENFOUR reminds us not
only of journalism’s ability to challenge entrenched power and corruption, but of
film’s capacity to reach audiences in a new way.
Today, we are seeing visual storytellers and journalists venture deeper into each
others’ traditional territory, as boundaries collapse, collide, and sometimes melt.
Our opening night film, THE IVORY GAME, exemplifies this shift. It follows activists
for wildlife protection who model their work on WikiLeaks, and a journalist who
makes a controversial decision, going undercover not in search of a story, but of an
end to poaching.
The seed of investigative storytelling is a skepticism toward power and an itch to
get at the truth. Double Exposure presents eight remarkable films, including one
U.S. premiere and six D.C. premieres that celebrates the work of journalists as they
venture into visual storytelling, and of filmmakers, too, who turn their lenses on the
big stories of our day.
Alongside the film series, the Double Exposure symposium taking place at the
National Press Club October 6 and 7 is creating a unique space for filmmakers
and investigative journalists to explore common issues, and to seed new forms of
inspiration and collaboration.
Thank you for joining us on this vital and exciting journey.
