local attractions / PARKS & RECREATION Leonis Adobe Museum T he Leonis Adobe Museum of Calabasas is dedicated to restoring, preserving and sharing California ranch life as it was in the late 1800s. Originally owned by Miguel Leonis and his Chumash wife Espiritu Chijulia, the Monterey-style adobe house stands behind the grape vineyard as it did during the 19th century. Since May 21, 1966, the Leonis Adobe has been open to the public, serving as an important cultural and historical landmark to the community. An integral part of the museum’s mission is for visitors to discover what daily life was like on a 1880s California ranch. Nearly 20,000 visitors come to the Leonis Adobe each year, most of whom are children on school tours. Spending a day at the ranch allows students on school tours to actively participate in the rich history that exists at this historical landmark. The Leonis Adobe also serves local school districts by funding bus transportation to the museum for qualifying schools. Visitors to the Leonis Adobe Museum are also welcome to see the Calabasas Creek Park located east of the main property. A new Chumash Indian village has been built near the creek behind the Victorian garden. It will soon be incorporated into school tours as an interactive way for students to learn about the Chumash culture and the settlements that existed in the area prior to Spanish settlement. Several events take place annually at the museum for the community to enjoy. They range from Winter and Spring events, Halloween Family Fun, Lil’ Ranchers Summer Program, Hands on History, as well as hosting charity organization events. The Leonis Adobe is truly a unique historic house museum, dedicated to educating visitors about life on the ranch in the 1800s. 23537 Calabasas ROAD Old Town Calabasas Open Wednesday-Friday and Sunday 1 pm-4 pm; and Saturday 10 am-4 pm CREEK PARK HOURS: Wed.-Sun. 10 am-4 pm (818) 222-6511 www.leonisadobemuseum.org THE LEONIS ADOBE MUSEUM Open to the public Group & Educational Tours Ground Rentals Children’s Programs Museum Store €‚€„Û:8C898J8JÛIF8;ÛÝÛFC;ÛKFNEÛ:8C898J8J ¨…~…©Û¤ƒ‚~~ÛÝÛoood]gfakY\gZ]emk]megj_ www.calabasaschamber.com 25
