Mary Sue Maurer was elected to the
Calabasas City Council in 2005 and was
re-elected to another four-year term in
2009 and 2013. She served as Mayor in
2008 and 2012. Her focus on the City
Council has been in the areas of environmental, senior and educational issues as
well as the development of public health
and public safety programs.
Some of her accomplishments include
sponsoring legislation banning plastic bags
in grocery stores; legislation that prohibits
the use of one-time use polystyrene
(Styrofoam) packaging by Calabasas
restaurants; and legislation that amended
the original Calabasas second-hand smoke
control ordinance.
As Mayor, Maurer signed the U.S.
Conference of Mayor’s Climate Protection
Agreement (supporting pledges to reduce
carbon emissions in their cities below 1990
levels) in line with the Kyoto Protocol.
As a member of the Santa Monica
Mountains Conservancy advisory board,
she is a leading advocate of acquiring and
protecting open space throughout the
region for public benefit. She is a strong
advocate for senior issues, including
establishing a Senior Task Force to advise
on a new senior enrichment center and
other issues.

Calabasas Historical Society, the Municipal
Management Association of Southern
California, the Urban Land Institute, the
Calabasas-Las Virgenes Historical Society, the
Sierra Club; and was a volunteer coordinator
for the Calabasas Special Olympics.
In May, 2002, she earned a Master
of Public Policy with Specialization in
Economics and Regional and Local Policy
from Pepperdine University, School Of Public
Policy in Malibu, California.
