Each season has its attractions, however fall is notable for its colorful foliage. Early settlers are credited with planting trees, especially maples, th at reminded them of their homes back east. Today, Grass Valley and Nevada City can claim some of the best color in the west which begins to intensify in October and is often at its peak from mid-month into early November. But weather is always a factor, so a call to the chambers of Commerce can give up-to-date information. Although spectacular foliage is scattered throughout both towns, there are some popular areas. For example, check out the streets adjacent to downtown Nevada City. Then visit Nevada Street on the other side of the freeway. In Grass Valley, explore the streets uphill from downtown. Walk up Neal Street to Pleasant Street, then back on Neal to High Street, turn left and right on West Main Street. Also, take a drive to Empire Mine State Park off Hwy. 174.
