Improve Your Golf Swing with FMS
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a pre-participation screening
tool designed to identify compensatory movement patterns that are
indicative of increased injury risk and inefficient movement that causes
reduced performance. Here at GGGA, we use the FMS to identify
compensations within the golf swing. However, we also modify the
system in scoring to custom fit our high standards for our athletes. The
FMS screening score is broken down into two components: Screen Score
and Performance Score. The combination of these two scoring systems
will test all golf swing components including: set up/posture, balance,
stability, mobility, flexibility, strength, speed/power, endurance, and
coordination. These tests help identify the athletes’ limitations.
EXAMPLE 1: SIT & REACH - One of the screen score tests we implement is the ‘sit and reach’. The sit and reach test is a
wonderful tool to test the flexibility in the lower back and hamstrings which are the primary muscles for correct posture
in the golf swing.
EXAMPLE 2: DEEP SQUAT - Our performance score test is the ‘deep squat’. We use this screening test to determine if
the student is ready from a biomechanical standpoint to make the correct sequencing during the golf swing. We do this
because if the athlete struggles to perform the test it raises a concern in the student’s hip rotation and ankle mobility.
These are just 2 of the 24 screen tests we perform to produce a
