& Publishing Symposium
The 4th Dawson Daily News Print & Publishing Symposium held in partnership with
Parks Canada and the Dawson City Community Library during the Art Festival saw
an increased number of visitors and workshop participants at the historical venue
throughout the weekend. At the symposium, visual and literary artists explore the
relationship between printed word and image, visual art and creative writing.
This year’s workshops and demonstrations covered techniques such as making print
with woodblock printing with John Steins and Monoprints and Collographs with Joyce
Majiski. Crispin and Jan Elwood from Barbarian Press were on hand throughout the
weekend using the restored Chandler Price press to print copies of the first Riverside
Reader, a compilation of writings submitted by local writers illustrated with prints
created at the symposium. Peter Braune is always on hand to keep the presses running
and do one on one demonstrations. Todd Stewart undertook Dog Team printmaking,
and Jill Stanton created exquisite corpse comic books. Emily Davidson explored
letterpress printing as she continued work on her alphabet book. Montreal printmakers
Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau pushed the boundaries of traditional printmaking
with their paper based live performance.
The Print and Publishing Symposium is also home to the annual Postcard Story
competition, which was won this year by Mary Fraughton. Mary’s story will be included
in the Riverside Reader. The winning entry, as well as the various works and publications
created during or for the symposium were unveiled at a concluding gathering at the
Dawson Daily News building.
