women & girls in sports It was another banner year for women and girls in sports, as we continued to provide a wide range of programs and events for athletes and sports enthusiasts of all ages. In June and July, the Department hosted free public broadcast/viewing parties of the Women’s World Cup soccer tournament in Canada. Thousands of fans came out to Civic Center Plaza each day to cheer on their favorite teams, including the U.S. Women’s team, which claimed the tourney title in an exciting 5-2 victory over Japan. The Mission Rec Center Rebels girls AAU basketball program continued its long-standing tradition of developing some of the best young basketball players in the country, claiming victories at tournaments all over the region. This summer, a group of 12 baseball players traveled across the country to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the first-ever Baseball For All National Girls Baseball Tournament, featuring some of the toughest athletes, ages 10-13, you’ll find anywhere in the country. Representing our department and our city, the San Francisco Bay Sox competed against 11 other teams and compiled an impressive record of 6-1, making it all the way to the semi-finals against the Central Florida Rays and finishing in third place. This historic event brought together the past, the present, and promoted the future of girls baseball. CLICK HERE FOR A VIDEO ON THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY SOX VIDEO
