Lander to add women’s cross country beginning 201617 academic year
GREENWOOD – Lander University will add women’s cross country to
its athletic program beginning in the fall of 2016, announced Jeff May,
Lander Vice-President/Director of Athletics today.
“(Women’s) cross country has a lot of interest in the area high
schools and we are excited to bring it back to our athletic program,” said
May, who added that women’s golf will be phased out after the current
academic year.
Of the Peach Belt Conference’s 14 member institutions, 12 offer
women’s cross country and eight offer women’s golf. Lander previously
offered women’s cross country from 1990-2008 and won three Peach
Belt championships.
“With the same funds that we are putting into women’s golf,
we can sponsor women’s cross country and add another 8-10 student-athletes,” added May. “From a budget standpoint, these additional
student-athletes will help the university financially.”
