PBC YEARBOOK Women’s Cross Country 2 5 Y E A R S Montevallo Claims Second Straight PBC Women’s Cross Country Title GAINESVILLE, GA – The Montvallo Falcons placed all five of their scoring runners inside the top 10 and ran away with their second consecutive PBC women’s cross country championship on Saturday at the University of North Georgia Gainesville campus. The title is the third in the last five years for the Falcons, who are ranked #19 in the nation and #1 in the southeast region. Young Harris’ Nancy Murgor won the PBC Individual Championship with a final-stretch sprint to edge defending race champion Katie Nelson of Montevallo. UM finished with 26 points in the team standings, easily defending their title. Nelson, Hannah Evans, Sierra Millsaps, Katherine Terino and Cheyenne Thompson all finished in the top 10 and all were named All-Conference along with Anna Leinheiser who finished in 10th but was not a part of the team score. North Georgia was second with 93, edging out UNC Pembroke in third with 103. UNG’s Brittany Truitt finished seventh while Jenna Tilton was 13th. UNCP’s Lea Tardanico was the first Brave to cross the line, finishing 15th. The individual race was a two-woman affair shortly after the 2015-16 starting gun went off. Nelson and Murgor were never more than a few steps apart throughout the first 5k of the 6k race, the two pulling away from the pack by over 15 seconds. With less than 400 yards to go, both runners began a small incline and Murgor found an extra gear, swinging around Nelson and taking the final two turns at a near full sprint. The freshman from Iten, Kenya, won the title in a time of 22:12.5 and was named the Individual Champion and Freshman of the Year. It is the third straight year a freshman has won the PBC Individual title. Nelson, Evans and Millsaps were the next three finishers followed by Clayton State’s Maia Kuhnen in fifth and Columbus State’s Rayna Green in sixth. The top 15 finishers were named All-Conference.
