In 2014, I will step away from full-time employment as chief executive officer (CEO) of ONS. It was not an easy decision, but I look forward to the transition into retirement to spend more time with my family. During my seven-year tenure as CEO, ONS has made noteworthy strides in improving outcomes in patients with cancer. We’ve accomplished this by advancing the oncology nursing profession and positioning oncology nurses as leaders in care quality and safety. ONS would not be successful without its members. Whether they’re volunteering at the local or national level, gaining an education through ONS conferences and courses, or spreading quality care through our publications, they are the heart of why ONS is transforming cancer care. Over the past seven years, ONS has strengthened our influence as the premier organization for nurses caring for patients with cancer. We’ve leapt to the next level by expanding our international presence, developing key educational programs, re-envisioning our national conferences, and keeping in step with technologic advances. In 2014, we modified several core programs that have enormous benefits, including the long-term vitality of our programs and services. I am particularly proud that in 2013, ONS won the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility. ONS achieved the CEO Gold Standard Seal in 2008 and has earned reaccreditation every year since. This would not have been possible without the hard work of dedicated staff. My heartfelt thanks goes to our members and the staff of ONS for making the past seven years a remarkable professional experience for me. It has been my honor to serve in this role. Paula T.
