(C1) 1919 HAWKER FLIGHT 3¢ RED BROWN
OVERPRINTED ........................................................ PH $25,000
Incredibly RARE bottom margin example, with characteristic
manuscript ‘J.A.R.’ on reverse – initials of Newfoundland
Postmaster General J.A. Robinson. These stamps were created
to frank the correspondence carried by Lieut. H. Hawker on
his Trans-Atlantic flight, the first attempted non-stop flight over
the Atlantic Ocean. Only 200 stamps were issued, 18 of which
were damaged and destroyed, 95 used on letters, 11 given as
presentation copies, and the remaining 76 sold in aid of the
Marine Disasters Fund. Fresh, MINT never hinged, especially
scarce thus. Fine plus. Makes for an amazing showpiece and
undoubtedly one of Canada’s greatest Airpost rarities. (2002
BPA Cert #58,273 for pair, this is bottom example). (UniTrade
CDN$35000=US$33321) Cat $37,500.
$100
Coil pair, OG, hinge remnant, fine. (UniTrade CDN$500=
US$476) Cat $375.
