The artist Cheesman sent his design to Postmaster General Lawrence O’Brien Jan 6, 1967, only to have it returned (registered) with a letter stating an artist for the issue had already been chosen. Lot includes painting, covers to and from USPOD, several pieces of correspondence, press releases, clippings and a photo essay (promotional) of final design. We were not able to locate letter from O’Brien’s office. Still, fantastic group of showpiece archival material and cornerstone for potential exhibit.
