2012 Midwest Tennis Hall of Fame Dorothy Watman Levine Kohl of Palm Beach, Fla., (formerly of Chicago, Ill. and Milwaukee, Wis.) was inducted into the USTA/Midwest Section Hall of Fame on December 1, 2012 in Indianapolis, Ind. The 2012 USTA/Midwest Section Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place at the Westin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis during the USTA/Midwest Section’s 119th Annual Meeting November 30-December 2, 2012. Waidner MaliVai Washington John Whitlinger Todd Witsken Barbara Wynne Dorothy Watman Levine Kohl Dorothy Watman Levine Kohl was one of the top United States female tennis players in the 1950s. Kohl won the national indoor singles and doubles titles in 1954 and 1957. In 1954, she also played Wimbledon and the French Open. Kohl was ranked as high as No. 11 in the USTA (formerly United States Lawn Tennis Association) in women’s singles in 1953. Kohl was also ranked No. 1 in the Chicago District Tennis Association women’s singles division for several years in the 1950s. Kohl was 12 years old the first time she was introduced to the sport of tennis. She started taking tennis lessons and began playing local tournaments, and soon started a great career. As a junior, Kohl won the USTA/Midwest Section (formerly Western Tennis Association) junior singles championship in 1947 and 1948. In 1946, she was ranked No. 1 in the United States Lawn Tennis Association in Girls’ 18 singles, No. 1 in the Chicago District Tennis Association in Girls’ 18 singles. In 1947 she was ranked No. 1 in the USTA/Midwest Section (formerly Western Tennis Association) in Girls’ 18 singles. Off the tennis court, Kohl is an avid art collector and charity supporter. She has served as chair and co-chair of various charity fundraisers. “Dorothy Kohl’s success and accomplishments as both a junior and adult player in the Midwest and nationally, make her an excellent addition to the USTA/ Midwest Section Hall of Fame,” stated USTA/Midwest Section Hall of Fame Chairman Ronald Brooks. About the USTA/Midwest Section Hall of Fame The USTA/Midwest Section Hall of Fame was established in 1984. It was relocated to the USTA/Midwest Section headquarters office in Indianapolis in 2006 after residing at the Markin Racquet Center on the campus of Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich. With the 2012 inductee class, the Midwest Hall of Fame is comprised of 68 distinguished individuals.
