Demarest hosts one of the high schools in the Northern Valley Regional system , as well as an active nature center with programs and events for children and adults . One of the highlights there is the annual Oktoberfest celebration . Near the center of town is the Duck Pond where many borough events , including the annual Demarest Day , are held . The community is made up of several treelined residential neighborhoods .

DUMONT

Established as the Borough of Schraalenburgh , and renamed after its first mayor , Dumont saw its earliest citizens open small businesses and settle in homes near the railroad that bisects it . Generations later , their proud descendants remain in the tightknit community . Local dignitaries cling to tradition , planting a tree each Arbor Day in an arboretum , adjacent to the railroad .
