They monitor patients for adverse effects and medication adherence. This relationship allows you to speak directly with a medication expert to assess and discuss specific drugs. “We know the customers. They are not just a name on an insurance card,” Dominguez says. “We know the details of a person’s history, their family.” Miller takes pride in knowing just about every person who walks through the door. “If we see a change in a person’s health, we can discuss and report it to the doctors,” he says. “We want to build trust and get to know the person.” J&J Pharmacy in Teaneck has been open since 1946 and opened a second store in Hackensack in 2008. They have more than 650 house accounts with customers who have been coming in for more than 50 years. The owner, Michael Fedida, stresses the importance of loyalty and getting to know his customers. “We are helping others in time of health and need, and work extremely hard to make every customer happy and feel better,” says Fedida, who is co-owner with his wife, Ellen. “We know personal information – ranging from their kids names to their allergies. We are problem solvers and have great relationships with doctors in town and in the area.” SPECIALIZED ITEMS AND SERVICES Some independent pharmacies offer organic over-the-counter medications, homeopathic and herbal remedies. Others have a large selection of medical equipment, including durable goods needed for the infirm, and breast pumps for nursing mothers. Glen Rock Medical specializes in medications to treat infertility, as well as injection training and financial plan options. Town & Country in Ridgewood is well-known for its quality makeup department and its watch repair kiosk. Miller’s Pharmacy has an area specializing in orthopedic braces and medical stockings. UNIQUE GIFTS Admit it – you’ve sometimes been caught without a gift for a special occasion and no time to head to the mall or buy online. While you can buy boxed candy and seasonal novelties at a chain drugstore, many of Bergen County’s independent pharmacies offer unusual, high-quality gift items – and some will even wrap gifts for free. THE LITTLE EXTRAS Some independent pharmacies offer things like a notary public, copy and fax service, and concierge service. Town & Country even keeps umbrellas by the front door that you can borrow if caught in a rainstorm. ■ 300 Sicomac Ave., (201) 891-0822 (201) WELCOME | 2017 EDITION 41
