FUN FOOD mmmm … macaroons T WRITTEN BY ELISE FALVEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNE-MARIE CARUSO he original cookie dating from a ninth century Italian monastery, the macaroon can be produced in a few different varieties. The most common in America is the commercially-made coconut macaroon with its moist, sweet and dense star shape, often dipped in chocolate. Homemade varieties are typically made with nuts and are shaped individually and have a lighter consistency. This sweet cookie is traditionally served during the observance of Passover because it contains no flour or leavening. ● Coconut and Chocolate-dipped macaroons $17 per pound, Lotito’s Deli & Bakery, 81 Interstate Shopping Center, Ramsey 12 APRIL/MAY 2017 | (201) FAMILY 201magazine.com
