Now that you understand what it is to be discreet, the other factor as mentioned previously is fear. The fear of the uncertain, upsetting people, subject to physical attack or even having your equipment stolen. These are considered as 'worse case scenarios'. To get yourself into the mind frame before you venture out on to the streets, maybe a good starting point is to ask for permission before you shoot. The worst-case scenario here is a refusal. Start by flattery, this tactic usually works! Compliment their look tell them they look great in their outfit. Tell the subject what you are doing, if you are a photography student or out to build a stock collection of photographs on a particular genre. Building a rapport with the subject might make them feel at ease with you. Once you have achieved this you can ask if you can take a photograph of them. Working in your favour, always offer to show the image you just took. If they like the photo, maybe even offer to email them a copy of the image. This should help you build up confidence and eventually shoot candidly without asking. The world is your canvas, happy shooting!
