'Shooting from the hip' is a term used in street photography. The camera is usually held at hip/chest height, this is a discreet way of taking photographs. The disadvantages are it is difficult to compose the shot. Obviously if the camera is placed to the eye, the composition of the image would be much better. But in doing that, it doesn't make you discreet any more as it's obvious you are taking a photograph. However, this can also play to your advantage especially in tourist areas. As long as you blend into the crowd, and not stick out like a sore thumb with a telephoto lens attached to your camera! Whilst tourists are snapping away, you can compose the image naturally. Holding your camera to your eye as if you are taking general holiday photos just like everyone around you.
