7 ) Do you do anything besides photography ?
In an artistic way … I think , I think compared to people with an office job I do because my partners highly involved , she ’ s the main one with the vintage stuff we do . I sort of see everything , it sounds so cliché , I ’ m not there for the run of the mill , and I ’ m not trying to be outside the box but I like the things we buy . We buy quirky things and pass them on and I think that in itself is artistic .
8 ) What influenced you to use the method you use rather than digital photography ?
Seeing an image in black and white magazine which turned out not to be a wet plate image but it was a long exposure , so traditionally this wet plate process started in the 1850 ’ s the sitter would be there for 30 seconds so there was a neck brace and the idea was to stare and I quite liked the staring expression that we see in a lot of the older images , and I saw this particular image and started to read up about the processes , I wanted to do daguerreotype but Tim said no , definitely a no because the chances were I ’ d die doing it so we compromised on doing wet plate .
9 ) Where do you think Photography is going ?
I think that eventually you ’ ll be able to record from your eyes with some kind of glasses , if you have a day out you can just put glasses on and just record the images that you think you want to see . Just like when I was coming up Bodnant Hill it looked like a nuclear explosion , it was a bonfire , but there were only like 10 seconds where the cloud looked right because it couldn ’ t rise because the air is so cold , by the time I got near a lay by you could tell it was a bonfire .
10 ) Is your interest in the arts broad or is it just photography ?
Yeah , I was taking my kids to Cornwall in the 70 ’ s and I remember seeing an artist called John Miller , it was one of his seascapes and there ’ s nothing there , so I started reading about him and took me to Howard Hodgkin , the colourist . I don ’ t need people drawn into it . I also can ’ t live without music , I couldn ’ t imagine life without music , it ’ s a mood thing and influences what you want to see .
