Sargent Park School

Named after a farmer, Mr. Sargent, he owned the land that is now named Sargent Avenue. The school Sargent Park and the park just near it was named in honour of him. Sargent Park School was set to open on September 1, 1948. Although it opened four months ago, its first students came on January 31, 2016. The school had an unstable foundation. The original build site was on top of a soggy creek bed which made it difficult to establish a strong foundation. After moving the site to its location today, about 2 years after its opening, the school got very crowded with students. Classes were held at the auditorium and the gymnasium was used often; so often that students from Daniel McIntyre used the gym as well. In 1952 and 54, more and improved classrooms were made, as well as a second floor which were built to accomodate both elementary and junior high students. A library was established too. The principal at the time was Mr. A.F. Brown. In !957, 5 more classrooms were made for home economic and industrial art shops. Sargent Park School was also one of the first schools to convert to gas heating. An electric storm caused part of its smoke stack to fall, thus converting the coal burning furnace to gas firing. On November 17, 2010 more classrooms were made for the Electronics and Graphic Arts Lab, as well as a Math Lab, a Resource Room, and space for a canteen. A multipurpose room was included to function as an elementary gym and replaced 4 old portable classrooms to new classrooms as well. Flourishing as a diverse school that offers many academic, athletic, and extra-curricular opportunities, Sargent Park School is the place to go.
