he opening guitar riff on “Hostiles & Renegades” is punctuated by a final vibrato note that sends shivers up the spine like the angry scream of a mountain lion. The cry comes, however, from Gary Small’s manipulation of the whammy bar on his beloved Paul Reed Smith guitar.
