WLM | business are never taught how to pay taxes or balance a checkbook let alone obtain EIN numbers or become a registered LLC.” He’s also found lots of support through his clients. “On the positive side, stores may be accepting of these items because I am a young entrepreneur and they want to help me succeed,” Conner adds. “I have also learned a lot about business. Almost every store we have stopped by has had advice on how to run a successful business whether it’s about certain licenses, keeping records, etc.” He also has a lot of help at home. “Both my mom and dad have been a huge help in creating this business. My dad helps in filling orders, and my mom keeps me on task and helps with the legal work, licenses and such.” Going through the creative and entrepreneurial process has afforded Conner some valuable lessons. “To other entrepreneurs, make sure you know which licenses to get and how to get them before you start selling. It will save you a lot with taxes,” he says. “Also, keep good records of your products, what you sell, and where. That will also help you later on.” How about advice for those younger creative minds out there? “For the ones my age that want to get into business: all those business classes in school aren’t super necessary. I took one last year and have used none of that information in building this,” Conner says. “Trial and error teaches you much more than sitting in a class ever will.” Above all, he adds one bit of advice. “One last thing for all ages of people: you cannot be shy. Selling your wares from behind a computer will only get you so far. Don’t be afraid to walk into a store and talk to the owner about featuring your products. Being able to interact with people confidently, face to face, is a huge part of owning a business.” Conner’s Custom Creations can be found on Facebook, and they accept private and custom orders, as well as custom design requests.
