alumni association meet your new Board members Wheaton College Alumni Association Board of Directors Joelle Meyer Herskind ’91 invests much of her time working with Jericho Road Ministries in Buffalo, NY, where she helps develop and market programs, guide volunteers, plan events, and write grants to support programming for refugee and low-income families. Joelle and her husband, Mark ’89, have four children. David McDowell ’68 is the senior pastor at Community Fellowship Church in West Chicago, formerly pastoring a church for 25 years and serving as an assistant chaplain with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for another 5 years. Dave and his wife, Gloria Farneth McDowell ’70, have five children. 34 aCCePting Board nominations for 2013-2014 34     W I N T E R   2 0 1 3 Donna Peterson Nielsen ’93 works part-time as a family physician at Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago and directs a one-month internship program for pre-med and medical students. She is also employed part-time with Wheaton College’s Student Health Services. She received her M.D. from the University of Illinois and is married to Brad Nielsen. The Alumni Association Board of Directors consists of 18 alumni representing every decade back through the 1960s. Directors are selected by the existing Board through a formal nomination process. All alumni are invited to submit nominations for open positions by sending a completed form to the Nominating Committee. Forms can be found under “Alumni Association” at alumni.wheaton.edu. Susannah Schwarcz ’00 is the director of fund development at By The Hand Club For Kids, an after-school program with an emphasis on academics and a commitment to nurturing the whole child—mind, body and soul. Susannah received her MBA from North Park University and was founder and president of Messianic Fellowship at Wheaton. Hythem Shadid ’79 is a physician and orthopedic surgeon with Genesis Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and is former president of the DuPage County Medical Society. Hythem received his M.D. from the University of Illinois. He is a member of the Middle East Engagement Council at Willow Creek Community Church. He and his wife, Beth, have four children. Renae Schauer Smith ’91 obtained her secondary teaching certification from Wheaton in 1995 and was employed as a G.E.D. instructor for at-risk youth before starting a family. Currently, she provides part-time college/post-high school guidance counseling at Paradise Valley Christian Preparatory in her home state of Arizona. Renae and her husband, Andrew ’91, have four children. Barbara Ruesche Scotchmer Winter ’60 lives in Pasadena, California. She serves as a missionary on the staff of Frontier Mission Fellowship. Barb worked for 30 years with the Hazelwood School District in Missouri. Her first husband, A. George Scotchmer ’44, DD ’62, and second husband, Dr. Ralph Winter, are deceased. Five of her grandchildren have attended or are currently attending Wheaton.
