This year marked the first ever tennis program for local kids ages 10-14 to compete against a variety of private middle schools all around the city of Memphis. Seven girls and eight boys competed this spring by representing one of the few public middle school programs in this area. Both girls and boys teams won half of their school matches. The boys’ number two player on the roster, Brandon Pham, and number five Justin Davis, boasted close individual winning records after many hard fought close matches for the boys’ team. Number one phenom, 5th grader Roberto Ferrer, and newcomer Gage Powell, a 6th grader playing fourth in the lineup, had notable records with even number of wins and losses against older Aleyla Wooten on the court. Many of the boys also participated in a local recreational league through Tennis Memphis called Junior Team Tennis (JTT), where the Arlington Boys Team placed second in the 14 and Under Beginner Division. JTT members Brandon Pham, Joseph Haynes, Justin Davis, and Jack Rowe all had winning records in this division. Girls’ number one star Aleyla Wooten blew away the local school competition with an undefeated individual season record of 11-0. Number two girl, 5th grader Alli Moultrie, surprised older players week after week with an impressive season record of 10-2. Junior Team Tennis members Alli Moultrie and Sydney Long also had winning records in the 14’s Beginner Division Photos by Christy Dupré representing the Arlington Girls’ JTT Team in recreational match play. In addition to regular season, the Arlington Community Tennis Team participated in the end of the year district middle school tournament. Facing the best players in the city, Sydney Long proudly advanced past the first round of tournament play. Aleyla Wooten lived up to her 6th seed by advancing to the quarterfinals of the tournament, where she lost a tight match against the third seeded player. With only one 8th grader from each gender graduating, the Arlington Community Tennis Team looks to be a powerful program on the rise.
