Local Parents Push for Delayed School Starts
By Terry Louderback
When Jill Yelland’s
daughter
started
elementary school, she was
surprised to learn that at
the high school classes
began at 7:00 am. ”I
thought that this was
unique to Cordova High
School, which had only
just opened the year
before.” At that time,
Yelland was amused by
the early hour, thinking
that teenagers usually like
to sleep late.
It wasn’t until the
American Academy of
Pediatrics and the Centers

Facebook, she met Valerie
Crabtree, a licensed
pediatric

Yelland, Crabtree, also has
children in local
elementary and middle
schools.

healthier start times at
AHS,” Yelland explains.
“Teaming up gave us the
courage to take the next
step and start an official
chapter of Start School

Crabtree had already
contacted the Arlington
Community School Board
as early as 2014 in order to
share her professional
opinion that high school
start times should be
delayed.
“For years, I have
