SQUIRMY WORMIES
Arlington Elementary Students Set Up Organic Waste Recycling
Center
By Terry Louderback
Students in Aaron
Thomas’s ESL class at
Arlington Elementary
learn “hands-on” the vital
role that decomposers,
such as worms and bacteria, play in the environment.
Students also learn
about recycling and ways
that humans can better
take care of our environment by being responsible
with our food waste.
Phase 1 of the project
consisted of two worm
farms; funding for this
phase was provided by the
Arlington Education
Foundation. The worm
farms allowed the students
to use food waste and
paper waste as food for
they digest the organic
waste (usually referred to
as castings), the students
can use it as a nutrient rich
fertilizer. Worm castings
can have 10x the amount
of nutrients that regular
soil has.
The next step in the
project (Phase 2) has been
funded by a $2000 grant
from The Lowes Toolbox
for Educators. With it,
Thomas plans to add more
worm farms as well as
regular composting bins

Lakeland’s Middle School Plans Moving Ahead
By Terry Louderback
At the February 8 Board Meeting, the Lakeland School Board
approved a Fall 2017 opening for
the new middle school, a year earlier
than originally forecast. Site work
on the middle school is expected to
begin before the end of the month.
Lakeland Superintendent Dr. Ted
Horrell anticipates opening the
school with grades 5-8 in the first
year. He added that “this will be, in
part, determined by the terms of the
new inter-local agreement with
Arlington Community Schools. “
While official notice to terminate
the Inter-Local Agreement between
the two school systems has not yet
been submitted, Horrell states that
the two superintendents have been
in communication throughout the
planning process for the middle
school.
Horrell puts the estimated number of students at opening between
600-650. He confirmed that Lakeland students in grades K-4 who are
currently zoned for Donelson Elementary in Arlington will be re-
zoned for Lakeland Elementary.
While the name of the school has
not yet been determined by the
school board, the
official mascot—a
Lakeland Lion—
was approved at
the January 15
meeting,
along
with modifications
to the current LSS
logo.
According to the
Lakeland School
System,
these
updates to the LSS
logo were designed
to enhance the
visual appeal of the
Lakeland School
System logo and
provide more flexibility and consistency in the use of
school and system
colors for various
uses
including
athletic uniforms, spirit items, and
promotional materials.
