NEWS & NOTES Lawyers needed to work with high school teachers through Justices Teaching Institute Volunteer lawyers are needed to assist with the third North Dakota Justices’ Teaching Institute: “The Constitution and Judicial Decision-Making” to be held October 17-18, 2013. The North Dakota Justices Teaching Institute is a day-anda-half educational experience, intended to offer high school history, government, and social studies teachers an up-close examination of their courts and judges. The Teaching Institute involves the study of the North Dakota court system, judicial decision-making, and the United States Constitution while experiencing a wide range of sessions, dialogue, and activities with the Supreme Court Justices. The North Dakota Supreme Court has developed this public outreach program to foster a better understanding of the role of the courts, how they work, and how decisions are made Lawyers are needed to work with participating teachers following the completion of the Institute in October. Attorneys may be asked to mentor teachers, answer questions about legal procedure, assist with mock trials, or guest lecture. Help maximize this experience for the teachers, and subsequently North Dakota students, by volunteering your time in serving as a mentor for a teacher from your area. Lawyers from the following areas are needed: Bismarck/Mandan, Dickinson, Williston, Beach, Halliday, Bottineau, Devils Lake, Hope-Page, Strasburg, Napoleon, and Fargo For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lee Ann Barnhardt at [email protected] or 701-328-4251. facebook.com/StateBarND 36 The Gavel Summer 2013
