YOUNG LAWYER The SBAND Young Lawyers Section (YLS) would like to congratulate all of the new lawyers admitted to the North Dakota bar on September 28. All new bar members are automatically members of YLS. The purpose of YLS is to encourage active participation of young lawyers in SBAND and in their local communities. To that end, YLS has sponsored a number of seminars and activities this fall. The YLS Education and Professionalism Committee hosted the Fundamentals of Law Webinar on October 21. Former Supreme Court Justice Mary Muehlen Maring presented on appellate advocacy. Young Lawyers and other licensed attorneys participated in this presentation. Information on upcoming webinars can be found at SBAND.org. In November, we have been sponsoring a “Joy of Sox” community project, collecting new socks to give to homeless shelters and community food programs across the state. The YLS Community Service Committee will host the Third Annual Feed Your Community food and fund drive this spring. YLS will again partner with Great Plains Food Bank to help feed those in need in our local communities. Our first two food drives were widely successful and are ranked the top two of the Great Plains Food Bank’s largest statewide food drives. We are excited to continue this worthwhile event this spring. To become involved in the food drive, contact James Tiegland at james@fremstadlaw. com. YLS will continue to host monthly luncheons and happy hours across the state. The luncheons serve as a great way to interact with other young lawyers in the community. If you are interested in hosting, please contact YLS Secretary-Treasurer Jill Martin at [email protected]. Contact Lindsay Harris, YLS President-Elect, at lharris@ maringlaw.com to nominate a young lawyer for the Showcase or to discuss opportunities to get involved with YLS. 28 THE GAVEL Megan Kummer is the Assistant State’s Attorney for Richland County in Wahpeton.
