Letter from the Dean
Communicator 2013
Dear Alumni and Friends,
You may be wondering what happened to the “old” Communicator.
We have been working with our colleagues in the Office of Marketing and Communications to develop an interactive online magazine that showcases all that is the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. We wanted to make sure we were ready before releasing Communicator 2.0. We welcome your thoughts and feedback.
A huge thank you goes out to Danny Bush, who designed and developed this issue of the Communicator. Danny is a 2013 alumnus and IMC graduate student, our Hellinger Award runner-up, Koop Broadcasting Award winner and Buffalo Broadcasters Association Tim Russert Medal of Merit winner. His capstone is also showcased on page 4.
We have had an incredibly busy year in the School of J/MC. Not only did we welcome new online graduate programs in Strategic Leadership and Integrated Marketing Communications, but we ushered in our first group of students in the new undergraduate Strategic Communication & Digital Media major. We also made extensive changes to the J/MC curriculum to address the changing media landscape.
You, our alumni, have been quite busy also. Please see page 10 for a feature on our extraordinary alumni in the field of sports reporting. You will also be able to follow a link to our website for more information on what many of you have accomplished this year.
The School of Business has moved into its new building — the William E. and Ann L. Swan Business Center — and we are in the process of redesigning the Murphy Professional Building to better suit our needs and the needs of others on campus.
We have convened an advisory council that will meet twice yearly to guide the School of J/MC in its goal of educating ethical journalists and strategic communicators in their pursuit of internships, graduate school and careers. We will look to these individuals to keep us on task.
Please know that we in J/MC welcome the comments and feedback of all of our alumni at any time. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please reach out to me at [email protected] or 716-375-2578. I welcome the conversation.
