section update Environmental & Toxic Tort Section By Richard E. Glaze, Jr. Balch & Bingham LLP [email protected] T he Environmental Section is off to a strong start. We began our year September 3rd with a meet and greet at the White Oak Kitchen in downtown Atlanta, which gave the members an opportunity to meet the Section Board and kick off the Labor Day weekend the right way. For the Section’s next event, we will team up with the Georgia State School of Law for a one-hour CLE on statutory construction for environmental lawyers. This is particularly relevant in light of recent important Supreme Court holdings that parsed language in the Clean Air Act and the Affordable Care Act. The meeting will be on October 3rd at the new law school facility and will be followed by a tour of the new school and refreshments with faculty. This opportunity is open not only to section members, but to other members of the bar for a nominal fee. The Official News Publication of the Atlanta Bar Association Future events in the planning stage will include joint meetings with the Construction Law and Real Estate Law Sections, which will review the EPA’s new Waters of the United States rule and the practical effects of the rule on the regulated community, including real estate developers. Speakers will include Clean Water Act and enforcement experts with longtime Clean Water Act experience. We are looking forward to an interesting and collegial year and welcome the participation of other members of the bar. August/September 2015 THE ATLANTA LAWYER 49
