Backspin: 2008 Hanks Massey By Amanda Herrington The first time Hanks Massey stepped onto the course at an AJGA event he was an 11-yearold standard bearer. Massey volunteered for three years at The Junior Players Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf at TPC Sawgrass where he had the opportunity to watch some of the top junior golfers like Jordan Spieth. “I knew Jordan was really good and that he was one of the best players in the AJGA,” Massey said. “But back then I didn’t know he was going to go on to be a great college player who turned pro his sophomore season.” In addition to Spieth, Massey was a standard bearer for Patrick Rodgers, Tanner Kesterson, Jim Liu and Gavin Hall. An aspiring young golfer, Massey observed some of the top AJGA players compete at a TOUR venue. “I would watch some of the stuff they would do and how they would go about their round,” Massey said. “I picked up a lot from them and knew I wanted to be like them.” Less than three years after his final tournament as a volunteer, Massey won his first AJGA event, the Preseason Junior at Vinoy. As he begins his own AJGA career, Massey has one sight in mind: TPC Sawgrass. “Ever since I volunteered I’ve wanted to play that tournament,” Massey said. “That’s my goal. By the time I graduate, I want to play The Junior PLAYERS like they did.”
