USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 05-04 reaches its 50 year milestone . Since the USCG established its Volunteer branch of the USCG Auxiliary in 1939 , our Flotilla , previously known as Flotilla 05-06 , has been an active part of City Island and all areas of our nation . During World War 2 many of the Island residents went on to serve over seas , leaving our shores of our City and nation vulnerable . The USCG Auxiliary stepped up and lent the use of their privately owned vessels to patrol the waters of our city , many of which belong to area yacht clubs . One such club was the Harlem Yacht Club . The USCG Auxiliary established a base of operations at
the club during the war and in June -6-1966 , the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 05-04 was chartered and has been using the HYC as a meeting place and a place to teach boating safety courses to the general public . Flotilla 05-04 has been an integral part of City Island , they have gone on to teach boating safety classes , do Vessel Examinations , do countless patrols , do Maritime domain awareness , do Marine Environmental Safety Patrols , provide countless literature to the Marine Dealers and to the public , rescue stranded boaters and provide assistance to the active duty Coast Guard and all on Voluntary basis .
